NEW DELHI, INDIA

More rain. Endless, driving sheets of it, battering the city for weeks at a time. Months. And Apollo with a stomach flu.

Seth Brooks suspected it was the marinade on the steak Adam Hayes had given him that was doing it, rendering his Doberman’s insides into a molten lava disaster zone. One more reason to hate the guy, he thought, hurriedly leashing the dog as he zipped up his raincoat, heading out again into the monsoon.

Of course, it wasn’t Hayes’s fault that Apollo wouldn’t do his business in the yard, that the damn dog demanded a walk every time he needed to poop, but Brooks was almost grateful for the excuse to get out, truth be told. He’d had a thought running through his head since Peshawar, and it was time to do something about it.

The streets were nearly empty at this time of night, and Brooks pulled the hood of his raincoat over his head as he let Apollo lead him out through the front gate and into the storm. The dog hurried to a patch of scrub beneath the banana trees in the alley, and Brooks looked away to give him some privacy while he did what needed doing. With all business completed, Apollo turned out of the alley again, and began pulling Brooks back toward the front gate and the shelter of the house beyond, but tonight, Brooks had another idea.

“Come on, boy,” he told the Doberman. “We could both use some exercise.”

Though Brooks had moved out of the home he’d shared with Jolene and Daisy after the divorce, he hadn’t moved far—only a few blocks, in fact, and still comfortably within a short drive of the city’s diplomatic enclave, where both the U.S. Embassy and Daisy’s American Embassy School were located. He’d wanted to stay close to Daisy, remain in her life—and he’d secretly hoped that maintaining proximity to Jolene would somehow convince her to take him back, though so far it hadn’t quite worked out that way.

Still, it was only a few minutes’ walk from Brooks’s house to Jolene’s, and once Apollo had accepted the fact that they weren’t going back inside just yet, he allowed Brooks to lead him down the dark residential streets, probably already anticipating a snuggle with Daisy on the other end.

Jolene’s house, like Brooks’s, was protected by a security wall, with a camera and intercom system installed at the front entrance. Brooks led Apollo to the gate and pressed the button to call inside the house. Lowered his hood slightly so that the camera could see him, and waited as the intercom dialed.

A click. And then a voice, but it wasn’t Jolene’s. “Can I help you?” A man, a deep voice, guarded. American. The voice of a man who felt comfortable answering the door at 9:30 at night in a house where he didn’t live.

Brooks tried to ignore the thoughts already racing through his mind. Cleared his throat and pushed back the hood a little further. “I’m here for Jolene,” he told the voice.
